November

Got an email back from the first sound company in LA that I contacted back in October.  They listened to the short and said the problems are all easy fixes.  The guy there offered to walk me through the steps to clean it up in Soundtrack Pro.  There is a bit more to making it into the BIG Hollywood screen sound, but it  is doable with the software I have.  I'll get a quote from them sometime this week.

Two resumes in from the local Craig's list for After Effects help.  I'm sure they're both great, but as you know it's a personality thing with me.  I need people who "get" what we're doing here and will work with us long-term, not people who are judging us to boost their own egos because they lack or have lost, the intellectual or spiritual insight to create anything original of their own. The first blunder is not having an opinion, the second and most important is having an opinion and not being able to back it up with any type of critical film knowledge.  We were so lucky to find true film artists to work on DL. Andrew Campbell, Jonathan Grout, Steve Gelder.... our hats off to you! It has been such an honor to work with you all.

Just got this note from Linda.

Good Morning, fun speaking with you and your son yesterday on Skype. OK, I am officially starting the press kit for DL this morning, will send you stuff as I move forward with it. I screened DL for some people last night during Thanksgiving dinner, whoo, hooo, everyone loved it and particularly "cried" as Sean reunited with his mother and said what a very moving scene it was. :) So, onward.

Hollywood films

Preproduction (the preparation of the film) 3-6 months, could be more.

Production (Filming) 2-4 months more or less depending on the film.

Post production (editing and all fininshing/polishing of the film) 6-8 months.

WE SHOT DISTANT LOCATION IN 14 DAYS!

I THINK WE CAN ADD THE REST OF THE TIME ON TO POST WITHOUT FEELING BAD?

We are very proud of having been selected to screen Distant Location beside such prestigious films. Many thanks to the Sandpoint Film Festival.  Here's wishing you all continued success in helping new filmmakers of all ages!

Linda Simeone, Distant Location writer, arrived last week.  We got her settled in at the dollHouse on Friday and left for the Sandpoint Film Festival Saturday morning.

It was raining heavily all day. That morning, many of the filmmakers met for coffee across the street from the Panida Theatre, at a little shop which offered free coffee and breakfasts for the filmmakers.
It was a great chance to network and find out what they were screening.

Linda and I attended all three blocks and were treated to a free stay at the Edgewater, a beautiful motor inn on Lake Pend Orielle.

  1. During the day I was able to get out my list of survey questions to see what the general opinion regarding a screenplay about the afterlife and old hollywood was.
It was most helpful in determining a target audience and figuring out where we should market our film and to whom the feature should be screened.

Here's a list of questions I asked to various filmmakers and viewers.

    Before and after the film:
Do you like films about old hollywood?
Peter Lorre and Loretta Young are depicted in the film, do you know their work?
Have you ever had a near death experience?

    After the film:
Did the story track in the 20 minute version of a feature film?
What did you think of the green screen back grounds?
    Was the sound distracting?
What did you think of the choice of music?
Was the James Wong Howe / Arthur character identifiable?
Did you think the actors were properly cast?
What did you think of the quality of acting?

  2. It's good to get genuine "feedback". I went to my friend Mary's house, her husband does "sound" for "Grey's Anatomy," a long running tv show. I told him the problems we incurred with sound, he sympathized, but said what he saw wasn't bad at all and everyone appreciated the fact the conditions we worked under, particularly utizing a dental floss budget.

  3. I posted the above for Linda. Same feedback I got from the first sound company. That's the quality we're looking for. Somebody who's in the industry at that level.
